Feeling like you need a break to connect with your inner architectural scholar? Take a trip to the Burton Barr Library in downtown Phoenix to be immersed in great design while browsing the latest reviews of architecture around the world. This is not your typical library with dark rooms, and long, uncomfortable rows and rows of books. The Burton Barr Library is a curving copper mesa split by a stainless steel metal canyon. Taking cues from Monument Valley, the library is a modern interpretation of the Arizona landscape. The five-story atrium, named Crystal Canyon, has nine skylights that add to the open feeling of the massive structure. Glass-enclosed elevators take visitors from the ground floor to the sweeping space of the Great Reading Room, the 43,000 square-foot 5th floor where the 32-foot high floating ceiling is suspended by cables and walls of glass allow light to flood the room. Skylights covered by lenses create an illusion of flames in the room at noon on the summer solstice of every year. This unique building stands as a testament to modern engineering and classic function. There are few libraries in the world that have been designed to be a work of art in the same way the Burton Barr has been designed. Small details such as the Venetian glass exposed in the entrance tunnel communicate to visitors as they prepare to be inspired by modern yet practical construction.
